    Lazier Police?

As many of you know I'm a university student in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. Hence I drive up and down the North South Highway quite frequently. Recently, I've been seeing things you wouldn't believe.

The issue with the driving mentality of drivers on this highway is 110 km/h is too slow. And I don't blame them for feeling that way. The average 'legal' drive along the highway from Penang to KL is a rough 5 hours long. Now of course some folk take it to far and tend to speed at velocities of up to 150-160 km/h which can be quite dangerous. To keep things in check, the traffic police tend to establish speed traps every so often. I remember back when you'd see the little malay dude in his white garb sitting behind a camera under a bridge, just waiting to strike with a photo of you. Recently however, things aren't so 'hip' anymore. Malaysian police have officially become lazy. I was driving the other day north-bound only to find that the usual guy I see under the bridge has been replaced... With a picture. Yeah that's right, the traffic police have stooped to not even bothering to pretend to take snap shots of you anymore. Now you see a picture of a policeman with a camera under the bridge eyeing you with his acrylic camera; or was it crayon? The bottom line is this has encouraged people to speed up more because they know for sure now that no one is watching... At all... What do you think of the impact of this move by local law enforcement?

    Learning The Guitar

After years of not playing any musical instruments, I finally decided to pick up my damaged old guitar and play. I'm teaching myself which is actually giving me results faster than I thought. The hardest part I would have to say is the finger pains that go with it. I'm still developing my guitar calluses and I know it'll take a while and hurt like hell. But hey, no pain, no gain.

On a separate note, I'm 5 weeks into my new semester and things aren't too bad. I actually won best poster for my Industrial Training Presentation ans my ugly piece of paper is going yo be stuck on the campus walls for a whole year. Crap...

Rub's got a new job and I'm really happy for him. I hope I can take some time off before I start my job next year. My girl also got a new job and she's considering it too. With all the job offers flying around you'd think Malaysia didn't have a lack of jobs.

Speaking about Jobs... I'm still awaiting Steve Jobs decision to bring the iPhone to Malaysia. I mean come on already! The iPhone is coming to Singapore on August 22nd. What about the significantly larger country above it! Jeeze... Damn island nations...

The internet is the new frontier of Malaysian marketing

Malaysian's may not have noticed it yet, but all around the world, a global revolution is taking place. Businesses are moving online. Increased capital costs to start up a business the 'oldie-goldie' fashioned way has essentially killed off encouragement for young entrepreneurs to do business with those big round juicy brains of theirs. I'm amazed, how few Malaysian companies have taken their corporations to the internet. Such a large area of trade with huge possibilities of expansion and advertising just waiting to be captured by the most willing explorers.

Let's sum up how an internet enhanced business would be beneficial to any corporation:

    1. It's cheap

Yes that's right, you don't need lot's of money to advertise on the internet or to construct a webpage. With relatively little required infrastructure, the cost is phenomenally low. All you need to do is approach a good web-hosting company, tell them you need a website and they'll supply you with some space on the web of the wide world to show yourself and your business. Constructing a website isn't to difficult either. All you need to do is contact me and I'll make one for you. All of this for less than the cost of putting up a 3 inch advertisement in the Malaysian Business Pages.

    2. It's effective

With the global era rapidly evolving, more and more tools are available at our disposal than ever. For example, one may utilise the effects of SEO or Search Engine Optimisation to put their site on the top of the search result list on popular search engines. This of course increases web traffic which increases business visibility which increases sales prospects which increases business income which increases the amount of apple pie in my stomach. Which reminds me... I've been having too much apple pie lately.

    3. It's unbound

A tricky word but nevertheless the best to describe the situation faced by internet sales. By being online and having the right keywords to describe your business, people can look up your field and find you easier than they can with a phone book or business directory. Your sales can come in from all across the nation and the globe simply because there is no great firewall of china blocking you from either your potential client in Barbados secret boyfriend in Tongo. But really I heard the men there have body hair in places you couldn't possibly imagine.

    4. It's up to date

And I'm not just talking about the fact that the ready content of the internet is editable. I'm also talking about internet infrastructure like connection speeds. Yes I know you'd rather swim in a vat of boiling lava than hear about TMnet's latest slimy efforts but before you commence with your self cooking propaganda hear me out. Internet in Malaysia is improving. It's better than it was 2 years ago. Albeit we've seen slow change but it's still been sure change. The reason nothing is moving fast is because we've only got one dependable wired ISP. Jaring is dead and Maxis is dead and oh wait that's it. Don't even get me started on wireless internet... Too late you've got me started on it but I'll only share my thoughts on this next time. (boo hoo!)

So as you can see, businesses now need that global edge. And let me tell you, it's a good time to be a Malaysian businessman who knows this.

I'm back, as in really really back...

Hello world, I'm Paul Pereira. We met once before but you must have forgotten all about me. This is probably due to the fact that the last time I made a blog post was 15 billion years ago. There's good reason. I've been really busy lately with work and also with work... Yes, I've got two jobs now I need to maintain to survive. Being a student all these years really gave me a false sense of reality. In campus, I'd wake up at eight and run off to classes 5 minutes late before coming back to my room after finding out class was cancelled. It would then be another 3 hours to the next class. In the mean time? More sleeping of course.

Work is so much different. You rise early to beat the traffic jam (yes there's still a jam i have to face although my work place is ten minutes away) before getting to your desk. Then you face your in tray and to-do list and plan the next grueling 8 hours of your life. This then becomes 12 hours as you need to do some over time (with no extra pay). Work is hard and you can't run from that. Working at Dynaplast Malaysia is similar to the normal work routine but I've been blessed with a great working environment and great working colleagues. This helps to alleviate some of the stress. From a previous post you would know this of course as I mentioned it in great detail.

My new business is an entrepeneurship called Pereira Consulting. it's a service for SMI's where i provide ISO 9001:2000 management aid, document control services, e-business solutions, quality control consulting, and errr... Well that's basically it. So far this has worked out for me as I have two customers already and hopefully more to come. Know anyone in need of some fancy upgrades to their business? let me know...
